Community for Unity

On June 3rd, we held our Community for Unity event where we celebrated the one year anniversary of Paddle Out for Unity.

Last years event was held in honor of the Black Lives Matter movement, to express our solidarity with the movement and with Black Americans facing the cruel reality of social injustices. The Changing Tides Foundation is committed to participating in active and effective solutions that will make equality a reality for all. We are constantly looking to grow in ways that support oppressed communities, and to help them in feeling heard in their experiences. This event drew in thousands of surfers who paddled out to sea, paying respect and memorial to the Black victims of police brutality.

One year later, in honor of this emotional event, we held Community for Unity to continue to show our allyship, and to continue to do the work that so desperately needs to be done. During the event, we highlighted BIPOC creators, in addition to local organizations, with the goal of amplifying these voices.

Participants and attendees of Community for Unity enjoyed drinks, food, music, and the unveiling of a beautiful mural by artist Hannah Eddy. Attendees also entered our raffles and the lucky winners went home with some noteworthy prizes including a GoPro, an Arbor Snowboard, and an Eco Surfboard.

Food at our event was provided by Rafikiz Foodz, serving up delicious and memorable Kenyan food, and drinks were provided by Sierra Nevada. Our musical guest, Paul Cannon from Iron Sage Wood provided tunes for our event, and we were also joined by surfboard shapers Ryan Harris and Mike Lynch.

We want to thank ALL of our participating vendors and NGO’s for being a part of this event including 1 Planet One People, Kindhumans, Textured Waves, Un Mar De Colores, Black Sand Surf, Color The Water, Outdoor Outreach, Stoked Mentoring, Encinitas4Equality, CTF, Imperfects, Native Like Water, Black Surfers, and Black Surfers Collective.

Additionally, we want to extend our gratitude to Red Bull, who matched $3,000 in donations, making our grand total raised $6,300.

These donations were split equally between Stoked Mentoring, Outdoor Outreach, Un Mar De Colores, and Encinitas4Equality.
